Antarctica: Life Emerging
featuring Yo-Yo Ma and forty musicians from eighteen orchestras around the world:
In a collaboration conceived and created to unite musicians and audiences across oceans and continents during the global pandemic, world-renowned photographers Paul Nicklen, Cristina Mittermeier, their organization SeaLegacy and I created Antarctica: Life Emerging to honour the wild and awe-inspiring spaces of the Antarctic. This innovative new work fuses breathtaking film created by Paul and Cristina with music I composed for Yo-Yo Ma and forty orchestral colleagues from eighteen orchestras around the world and is the first in a trilogy of works for film and orchestra that will be performed and released in following seasons by the Vancouver Symphony and partner orchestras on themes of ocean conservation.
Antarctica: Life Emerging was collaboratively supported by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the non-profit organization SeaLegacy, the Aventa Ensemble, and by members of the Baltimore, Calgary, Chicago, Cincinnati, Kitchener-Waterloo, Melbourne, Montreal, New Zealand, Québec, San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto Symphonies, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the London Philharmonia.
Violin Concerto
My Violin Concerto was written for violin soloist Rachel Barton Pine and was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with the generous assistance of the Hugh Davidson Fund through the Victoria Foundation. It was premiered by Rachel Barton Pine with the Vancouver Symphony and Maestro Bramwell Tovey in January 2018.
Confluence
Confluence is a multi-media collaboration between Kanien'kehá:ka (Mohawk) - Acadian - Irish artist Lindsay Dobbin and Marcus Goddard, commissioned and premiered by the Victoria Symphony with generous assistance from the Hugh Davidson Fund. This performance for small ensemble and electronics was recorded by the Aventa Ensemble on March 1, 2020, in Victoria, BC.
